Fantasy Football: Week 8 IDP Report

Estimated Reading Time: 75 minutes

Week 8 takeaways

Waiver wire

  • LB Christian Rozeboom and Claudin Cherelus, Carolina Panthers: While Wallace was operating as the team’s lone full-time linebacker, that role went back to Christian Rozeboom following the injury, and the LB2 role went to Claudin Cherelus, who will be a deep-league IDP option only if Wallace misses any time.
  • LB Devin Bush and Mohamoud Diabate, Cleveland Browns: Bush becomes more widely viable in IDP formats because Carson Schwesinger’s injury is expected to sideline him for the foreseeable future, as Bush will move into a full-time role. Mohamoud Diabate took on the part-time LB2 role for Bush while Schwesinger was out of the game and could be a viable fill-in option for deeper leagues.
  • LB Curtis Robinson, San Francisco 49ers: Robinson operated as Dee Winters’ direct replacement and should be considered the primary IDP target if Winters were to miss any time. Luke Gifford remained the base personnel LB3, playing mostly on the edge (67%). Robinson played 100% of the defensive snaps with Winters out of the game, despite not playing prior to that injury, while Robinson played just 53% with Winters out.
  • S Chuck Clark, Pittsburgh Steelers: Clark filled in for the injured Elliott, and it looks like he’ll get a shot to play a significant snap share in what has been an IDP-friendly role, assuming Elliott misses time.
  • S Malik Mustapha, San Francisco 49ers: Mustapha finally moved back to a full-time snap share this week after being held to just 70% last week and 40% the week before. As a result, Mustapha delivered a double-digit tackle performance and can be considered a usable IDP option for teams in need.

Be sure to check out last week’s waiver wire targets and team usage here.

  • Rookie watch: James Pearce Jr. played a season-high 71% of Atlanta's defensive snaps this week, though he has only hovered around average in terms of most of his underlying metrics. There isn’t a whole lot for IDP managers to feel overly encouraged about for Pearce’s IDP value right now, other than the playing time.

  • Point of interest: With Divine Deablo now on injured reserve, last week’s waiver target JD Bertrand stepped into a significant snap share in his stead. There was some concern earlier in the week that Bertrand might potentially share his workload with others to fill the void; however, this was good confirmation for IDP managers who will be relying on Bertrand in the interim.

  • Point of interest: For the second-straight week, Jessie Bates spent over 70% of his defensive snaps in the box, which is a remarkably high number for any defensive back, and unlikely to stay as high. However, it’s a great predictor of future tackles, as he is the clear leader in box deployment at his position. Bates did leave this game early in the fourth quarter and did not return, so that will be something to monitor heading into next week.

  • Rookie watch: Mike Green landed his first NFL sack this week, which was nice to see for a player we had high IDP hopes for coming out of the NFL draft. Green has been getting the playing time, but he just needs to improve as a pass-rusher to be a true riser in the rankings going forward.

Jake Hummel1.6%2.1%0.0%0
  • Point of interest: Roquan Smith’s returned, and there was a slight shift in defensive scheme, as the team ran more three-safety looks, which cut into Teddye Buchanan’s overall snap share. This also pushed Trenton Simpson’s workload way back down to unplayable territory for IDP purposes.

  • Point of interest: The Ravens appear to have made a minor tweak to their defensive secondary coming out of the bye week, as newly-acquired Alohi Gilman took on an every-down role over rookie Malaki Starks. Starks still played a significant role as the team leaned into that three-safety look this week.

  • Injury: Ed Oliver left this game late in the first half due to a biceps injury and did not return. Oliver has played well when in the lineup, landing a sack in each of his three games played this year. It’s expected that Oliver will miss the rest of the 2025 fantasy season, at the very least.

  • Point of interest: Terrel Bernard came into this week with an injury designation after leaving last week’s game, and while he was active this week, he did not see the field on defense. With Matt Milano also out, it’s possible that Bernard was only active in case of emergency, and once he’s healthy, he’ll likely return to a full-time snap share.

  • Rookie watch: Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight Jr. were the starting linebackers again this week, as Knight led the team in tackles this time. Carter is still the preferred IDP option of the two because of the (minor) difference in snap share, though Knight will have value in non-shallow formats as well.

For IDP managers who get frustrated by the occasional low-output games from Garrett, hopefully, this will serve as the final reminder to never take him out of lineups.

  • Injury: Carson Schwesinger suffered a high-ankle sprain injury during the fourth quarter of this game and should miss time, though apparently the injury isn’t considered “major,” according to Ian Rappaport.
  • Waiver wire: Devin Bush becomes more widely viable in IDP formats with Schwesinger’s injury expected to sideline him for the foreseeable future, as Bush will move into a full-time role. Mohamoud Diabate took on the part-time LB2 role for Bush while Schwesinger was out of the game and could be a viable fill-in option for deeper leagues.

  • Rookie watch: Donovan Ezeiruaku put together a strong performance as a pass-rusher in a very difficult matchup this week, leading to a career-high pass-rush grade. Unfortunately, it didn’t lead to much IDP production for the rookie second-rounder; however, if he can string together more performances like this one, he’ll become a more viable IDP option.

Jack Sanborn was inactive for this game. DeMarvion Overshown may get eased into the lineup in the coming weeks, as his 21-day window was opened this past week. • Point of interest: Nik Bonitto has gone back-to-back games without a sack after delivering eight through his first six games of the season. Bonitto’s underlying pass-rush metrics over the last two games can help explain why he’s been shut out, though his high upside still keeps him in play for most IDP lineups for the time being.

  • Point of interest: The Packers continue to rotate Evan Williams off the field just enough to limit his IDP value. This is now the second-straight game where Williams has played below 85% of the defensive snaps, which is enough to keep him out of IDP consideration until he’s back to a full-time role.

  • Droppable: Nate Hobbs played just four defensive snaps in this game, as it appears the team does not view him as a starter, despite playing him in an every-down role as recently as last week. Considering the Packers’ unreliability in terms of their defensive back usage this season, he may bounce back; however, it’s not worth waiting on or hoping for while the pool of defensive backs is so big and we can easily move on.

  • Point of interest: Danielle Hunter was held to a low IDP output again this week, which might be frustrating for IDP managers, though it’s worth noting that his playing time and pass-rush metrics are still in a good place where he should bounce back in better matchups. The Texans, in general, played just 48 defensive snaps this week, so Hunter saw just 36 pass-rush snaps. More opportunities will allow him to bounce back.

Franklin can easily be benched for plenty of other IDP linebacker options in the weeks ahead.

As a result, Eboigbe has landed four sacks on the year, and two came this past week. • Point of interest: With Andrew Van Ginkel out again this week, Dallas Turner had a strong snap share to work with; however, he was relatively ineffective for IDP purposes, landing just two assists and one QB hit. Turner’s underlying pass-rush metrics haven’t really shown enough improvement from his rookie season to be overly encouraging for IDP. Turner is still very young and will continue to get opportunities to deliver on his first-round investment, though we might not see real IDP returns this season.

  • Trending down: Theo Jackson lost his full-time role to Harrison Smith last week coming out of the team’s bye, though his snap share was still at least in a spot where he could be considered a viable IDP option. However, this week, he dropped below 50% of the defensive snaps, which is going to take him completely out of IDP consideration heading into Week 9.

  • Droppable: Pete Werner has now played fewer than 60% of the defensive snaps in three straight games. For IDP managers hoping that he can produce the way he did at the start of the year, it doesn’t appear that those days are likely to return.
  • Rookie watch: For dynasty managers who have been hoping that the reason for Werner’s snap decrease came as a result of Danny Stutsman’s increased playing time, that hasn’t exactly been the case just yet. While Stutsman has gotten on the field in Werner's place at times, it hasn’t been significant enough to point to a true changing of the guard, as Stutsman played just eight defensive snaps this week. He has played more than that just once this year so far.

  • Rookie watch: Abdul Carter played a season-high snap share this week, coming up with five total pressures. Carter has been kept out of the sack column since Week 1, but playing time and underlying pass-rush metrics point to a promising long-term IDP asset, which could be an opportunity for dynasty managers to potentially buy low on Carter before he starts to deliver on that IDP potential and raise his stock.

  • Point of interest: Dru Phillips played a season-low snap share this week, which is most likely due to the Philadelphia Eagles playing just 56% of their offensive snaps in 11 personnel, causing the Giants to try and match personnel, which ultimately hurt Phillips’ playing time. Phillips will have to be considered a matchup-dependent IDP option because of this usage.

Sherwood played 100% of the snaps from the second quarter until the end of the game. Quincy Williams returned from injured reserve and played 83% from the second quarter on, which likely still keeps Sherwood as the top IDP option to roster here, assuming the disciplinary stuff is over.

Dean was eased in last week, but this week’s deployment should be viewed as an indication that the Eagles want to rely on Dean as a starter. It should also be noted that 38% of Campbell’s snaps were spent on the edge.

This week, Wilson got more work on early downs and led the team in tackles, putting him back in consideration for deeper IDP leagues only.

Luke Gifford remained the base personnel LB3, playing mostly on the edge (67%). • Point of interest: Considering the heavy rotation amongst the Titans safeties in recent weeks, there isn’t a trustworthy IDP option in the bunch for the time being.

  • Waiver wire: With the Commanders running low on usable edge options, Jacob Martin played the highest snap share of the bunch and delivered a two-sack performance. While he’s on a five-game sack streak now, we can probably expect a cool-down period, though his overall volume and solid pass-rush metrics are solid enough to be a streaming option if needed.

  • Point of interest: Quan Martin feels like the lone Commanders safety worth trusting for IDP at this point, as Jeremy Reaves and Darnell Savage rotated heavily at the position this week. However, last week, it was Martin who was getting the rotation treatment, and as a result, it’s kind of difficult to trust anyone from this group until we see some consistent usage.
