Fantasy: Special Team Pickups - Week 8

While I didn’t pick the best of the best at kick returner, going the kick returner/punt returner route worked and all three players were very similar. Randall Cobb, Antonio Brown, and Leon Washington three kick returns for 60-71 yards, and each had two punt returns between 39-47 yards. As for kickers; each had at least two field goals, and John Kasay was the best pick with eight extra points to go along with his two field goals. This week we’re at it again to pick some good pickups for you.

Kick Returners

Kealoha Pilares – He is a 5th round rookie for the Panthers, and over the past three weeks he has taken over the kick return duties. A kicker who I frequently mention here is Ryan Longwell, who has had 72.2% of his kickoffs returned. Pilares has been limited in the number of returns he’s had so far, and if there is any week for him to break out, this is the kicker who can help him make it happen.

Ted Ginn – If you’re in a league with fantasy points, you need to pounce on him. In week 6 he had 105 kick return yards, 72 punt return yards and 24 receiving yards. When you’re both a starting receiver, kick returner and punt returner, you have a great opportunity as long as he keeps up playing all three roles. While the Browns might not score much, Dawson has only had five touchbacks, and Ginn can still get the punt returns.

Dion Lewis – A fellow 5th round rookie who plays for the Eagles, other than a five return game against the Falcons; he’s had just two returns in four games and none in another. He’s been consistently averaging around 20 yards per return, so if he can have another five return day he will be solid. The Cowboys offense should be able to put up points on the Eagles more than other teams which leads to more kickoffs, and Dan Bailey has only had six of his 25 kickoffs touched back.

Kickers

Rob Bironas – This well-known kicker hasn’t had the best season so far, with just seven made field goals on nine attempts. If he had been drafted at the beginning of the season, chances are he’s been dropped by now. If there is any team for him to turn his season around against; it’s the Colts. He allowed the Saints to score ten times on them. The Titans offense is capable of getting the ball down the field, but this time it might be more field goals than touchdowns which helps Bironas.

John Kasay – I know it might be cheating to leave him here two weeks in a row, but he goes from facing the worst defense from the AFC to the worst defense in the NFC. If no one in your league listened to my advice to pick him up last week, then fix that mistake and add him this time, as we could very well see close to a repeat of his 14 point performance.

Lawrence Tynes – I might just be getting cocky after two weeks with no busts, but I’m going with a kicker who has only made four field goals all season. However this week the Giants go up against the Dolphins. They have been able to put up a lot of points on defenses that are better than this, so they should be able to put up even more points this time. This should mean more points for Tynes then he’s had all season.
