Today, I put together a plan of attack for my RotoBowl draft, which is set for the evening of Monday, September 6th. When I made the announcement on Tuesday that I’d be participating in the 2010 RotoBowl, I promised I’d share my draft strategy with all of you, so here we go:
The first step in preparing for a Fantasy Draft is to study and be sure you understand the league rules. That being said, here are the highlights:
- 12 teams will participate in the league
- Rosters will include 20 players, 11 of which are starters
- The 11-man starting lineup is as follows: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, FLEX, FLEX, K, D/ST
- Scoring is fairly standard. Passing touchdowns score you 4 points. All other touchdowns are worth 6 points. 1 point is awarded for every 20 passing yards and every 10 rushing/receiving yards. This is a PPR league, which means an award of 1 point is given for each reception.
Because quarterbacks receive only 4 points for a passing touchdown, I will be waiting to select one. Once I fill in most of my running back and wide receiver slots, my target will be Jay Cutler. Considering how deep tight end is this season, I will not select one in the early rounds unless Dallas Clark or Antonio Gates fall way beyond their ADP.
I will be selecting sixth overall, which is not a bad spot to be. With Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, and Maurice Jones-Drew likely to be off the board, it is very likely that I will end up with either Frank Gore or Andre Johnson. Michael Turner would tempt me if Gore is taken 5th overall, but the PPR format pushes Johnson ahead.
My second pick will be at #19 overall. Assuming I take Johnson in round 1, a running back is a must at this point. I will be hoping and praying that Jamaal Charles falls to me here. If not, Knowshon Moreno, DeAngelo Williams, or Pierre Thomas should be available. If Gore is my round 1 pick, my target here will be one of the aforementioned running backs or an elite wide receiver. Greg Jennings, Larry Fitzgerald, or Brandon Marshall would be nice fits.
From there, it’s anyone’s guess how the draft will flow. My main focus throughout the early-to-mid rounds will be solidifying my starting running back and wide receiver units, while also adding plenty of depth at the running back position. It’s unlikely that I’ll bite on a quarterback or tight end before round seven.
Considering this will be approximately my 20th and final fantasy draft, I obviously have a short list of guys I’ve accrued on most of my teams. Of course, the fantasy stock of each player changes on a daily basis, so guys I used to get later in drafts now are being selected a lot earlier (eg. Arian Foster, Ahmad Bradshaw, Wes Welker). That being said, here are a few names I’ll be targeting on Tuesday:
QB – Jay Cutler, Ben Roetlisberger
RB – Jamaal Charles, Pierre Thomas, Ahmad Bradshaw, Javon Ringer
WR – Wes Welker, Hakeem Nicks, Terrell Owens, Johnny Knox, Devin Hester, Mike Thomas, Brandon Tate
TE – Zach Miller (Oak), Jermaine Gresham
Now that I’ve given away all my secrets, all that’s left to do is wait patiently for draft day. Check back next week for a draft recap, which will include analysis and rankings of each team.
