Fantasy: Week 10 Mailbag

Throughout the 2011 season, Tyler Loechner and Alex Miglio will select Twitter questions and answer them right here at PFF Fantasy. Although you’re bound to have your questions answered almost immediately from the staff on Twitter, we will choose a handful of good questions each week and give them more in-depth answers. Here are this week’s questions and answers:

my RBs suck..need to pick 2/3 out of Starks Tolbert Tate (I also have jahvid and Ingram) which 2 get the nod this week?@DonseliusDurang

Loechner – Your running back situation isn’t the best, but it could be worse. Once everyone heals up, it gets better for you. For week 10,  I would start James Starks and Ben Tate, with Mark Ingram as your third option if you need it.
Of the combined 465 snaps between Green Bay running back, Starks has accounted for over two-thirds of them. Even though he has only one rushing touchdown (which came in week 1), his workload has remained the same. Starks has seen either 12 or 13 carries in each of the past five games. It’s not RB1 material by any means, but Starks is bound to find the end zone again soon.

I like his scoring odds this week against Minnesota. The Vikings have Jared Allen, who boasts a 14.2 PFF pass rating. When Green Bay and Minneosta played in week 7, Allen registered two sacks and an additional QB pressure. As a result, I expect Green Bay to run the ball – if only slightly more – this week than most weeks.

Tate might be backing up Arian Foster, but he has been exceptional himself. Of running backs with over 100 attempts this season, Tate leads all with a 5.8 YPC average. He may see less than 25 percent of Houston’s snaps, but Tate has averaged over 10 carries a game each of the past three games. Keep him in your line-up, his 11 runs of 15 yards or more (tied for fourth in the league) shows that he is explosive enough to score from anywhere.

Trade santonio Holmes for breaston. Who wins?@freshfinz

Miglio – As much as he’s underperformed, I would still say the Holmes side of this trade wins. When evaluating two mediocre offenses with mediocre quarterbacks, talent is key, and Holmes wins that battle handily. Breaston has a decent schedule, facing the Broncos, Patriots, and under-performing Packers pass defenses, but Holmes has a good matchup in each of the rest of his games, going against the Patriots, Broncos, Bills, Redskins, Chiefs, Eagles and Giants to close out the fantasy season.

Is Jackie Battle going to be a thorn in the side of Jamaal Charles owners come 2012?@thebottlenose

Miglio – I really really really want to say, “No way,” but I know Todd Haley too well — Charles could be averaging 6.4 YPC and only get 12 touches a game. Still, it is hard to imagine the Chiefs holding Charles back to the likes of Battle. If Charles is fully recovered from his injury, he is the dynamic playmaker the Chiefs need on the field.

Tight ends this week – Rob Gronkowski or Owen Daniels?@jloechner

Loechner – Both are great options and worth a play if you can play TE in your flex position, but between just these two, I’ll go with Gronkowski. He has a tough match-up against the Jets this week, but I still expect him to receive plenty of targets.

Gronkowski has 61 targets, 12 more than Daniels. Gronk’s 44 receptions are tied for second most in the league among tight ends and his six touchdowns are tied for first. Gronkowski also has five games with over 80 yards receiving, while Daniels has just one game with over 80 yards. The Jets will likely use Darrelle Revis exclusively on Wes Welker, meaning Gronkowski will be even more important in this game than most. Expect him to be a target all game, especially in the red zone.

After scoring a touchdown every game between weeks 2-4, Daniels has not found the end zone in the last five games. With Arian Foster and Ben Tate playing at such high levels, Daniels has become less of a red zone threat. However, Daniels does have our second highest pass rating (11.4) among tight ends, and his 447 yards are fifth most. Again, if you can play both tight ends, do it. But Gronkowski has just been too hot to bench, even with a harder matchup this weekend.

What should I do with Braylon Edwards and Heyward-Bey in my keeper league? I also have Nicks, Fitzgerald, Collie and Gaffney at WR – @MikkelLasson

Miglio – Cut bait? Braylon certainly has exhausted his supply of dynasty relevance, while DHB has a tiny bit left as he has improved this season and Jacoby Ford cannot seem to stay healthy. Depending on how many you can keep, Gaffney is the only other guy I would lump with the first two – if you can only keep four, I would probably swap Gaffney out for DHB in that scenario.

Earl Bennett have upside over Lloyd, Boldin or AJ Green this week if so which one and why@andyhubba

Miglio – I like what Earl Bennett brings to Jay Cutler and the Bears offense, but I don’t know if starting him over these other three guys is a wise idea. I have all three ranked ahead of Bennett this week, playing against a Lions defensive front that is not likely to let Cutler stay clean (though the Eagles have a pretty good pass rushing front themselves). With Hester ailing, though, it’s a close call. Brandon Lloyd seems like the likeliest candidate this week, going up against Joe Haden and the Browns.
