The NFL's best position groups ahead of the 2019 season

Over the last couple of weeks, we at PFF have compiled a list of the best position tandems in the NFL. From dominant pass-catchers to stingy cornerbacks, here, you can find the NFL's best position groups ahead of the 2019 season.

The NFL's best pass-catching tandems

The following teams have the luxury of possessing some of the top receiving tandems in the NFL, with each player complementing the other in different ways. As we inch closer to the start of the 2019 season, let’s examine the league’s most dynamic pass-catching duos in greater detail. Read more…

The NFL's best rushing tandems

The 2019 offseason saw many running backs find a new home as teams proceed to practice a committee approach or opt for a younger player as opposed to a veteran with an exorbitant salary, but in today’s NFL, young quarterbacks are also being paired with elusive running backs to take a different offensive approach. The NFL's best offensive tackle tandems

Few teams are lucky enough to have one game-changing offensive tackle; a player who can stymie even the fastest outside linebacker or the strongest defensive end. But even fewer teams can lay claim to having “bookends,” a pair of offensive tackles who, at their best, can anchor an entire offensive line. Read more…

The NFL's best offensive guard tandems

Offensive guards, often the forgotten members of the offensive line, have seen their job get significantly more difficult over recent years. Gone are the days when all they had to worry about was the powerful, 350-plus pound defensive tackle lined up opposite them. Now, with the influx of the smaller, quicker defensive interiors who possess the same arsenal of moves that the NFL’s best edge rushers do — see Donald, AaronJarrett, GradyJones, Chris — guards are now expected to both fend off the pass-rush with the best of them and power the run game by opening up rushing lanes in athletically demanding blocking schemes. The NFL's best edge tandems

When it comes to picking the league’s most exciting young edge rushers, we’re almost spoilt for choice. After all, edge — a position that’s sought after every year in both the draft and free agency— is considered to be a premium position, as teams really need not look any further back than the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles (but if they wanted to, there’s always the 2015 Denver Broncos) to see the scope of what’s possible with a formidable, unrelenting presence off the edge. The NFL's best interior defender tandems

The following teams have the luxury of possessing one of the top interior defender tandems in the NFL, with each player complementing the other in different ways. As we inch closer to the start of the 2019 season, let’s examine the league’s most dynamic duos along the interior defensive line. Read more…

The NFL's best linebacker tandems

The analytics world was taken by storm a few weeks ago by a discussion that argued the importance of pass-rush versus coverage for defensive players. PFF data scientists Eric Eager and George Chahrouri examined the value of both coverage and the pass rush amid this discussion. It just so happens that modern-day NFL linebackers must possess the ability to impact the game in both of these crucial facets. Read more…

The NFL's best safety tandems

The value of a versatile, three-down safety is at an all-time high in today’s NFL. With the ever-growing use of creative and exotic passing concepts, defensive coordinators leaguewide have come to rely on athletic safeties to disrupt the passing game, either by combating athletic tight ends or facing up against big-bodied receivers in the slot. The NFL's best cornerback trios

As our research and development team alluded to a few weeks ago, coverage — as opposed to pass-rush — is king when it comes to stopping an opposing passing attack. During the PFF era, teams with elite coverage (67th percentile or better) and a poor pass-rush (33rd percentile or worse) win, on average, about a game and a half more than teams with the reverse construction. And that highlights just how important it is to have a difference-maker (or three) roaming in the defensive secondary. Read more…
