2025 NFL Preview: New York Jets

  • Head Coach: Aaron Glenn (first season)
  • PFF projected win total: 6.3
  • 2024 Record: 5-12 (fourth in AFC East)

Biggest strength: Offensive Line

If first-round tackles Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou live up to expectations, the Jets could soon feature one of the NFL’s top offensive lines. Fashanu earned a solid 74.7 pass-blocking grade last season at left tackle and will stay on the blind side in New York. Membou, meanwhile, ranked third among all FBS tackles in overall grade (90.6) at Missouri. The interior should also hold up well, as John Simpson and Alijah Vera-Tucker both ranked among the top 10 at their positions in PFF grade last season.

Biggest weakness: Receiving Depth

Garrett Wilson ranks among the NFL’s elite wide receivers, but the Jets lack proven pass-catching depth behind him. No other player on the roster surpassed 530 receiving yards at the NFL level last season. Allen Lazard has struggled with reliability, dropping nearly 18% of his catchable targets over the past two years. Josh Reynolds and Tyler Johnson have yet to establish themselves as consistent contributors. The tight end room is thin as well, with second-round rookie Mason Taylor likely to take on the bulk of the receiving workload.

Quarterback spotlight: Justin Fields

  • 2024 PFF Grade: 71.0
  • Key Stat: 3.08 Second Average Time to Throw (3rd-highest among qualified QBs)

Fields started the Steelers’ first six games in 2024, leading the team to four wins before yielding the job to Russell Wilson. He opened strong, ranking fifth in the NFL in passing grade (81.0) over his first three starts. However, he regressed down the stretch, posting a 52.2 passing grade with two big-time throws and six turnover-worthy plays over his final three outings. Fields' biggest value remains his rushing ability. His 92.3 rushing grade over the past three seasons ranks fifth among all NFL quarterbacks.

Offensive player: WR Garrett Wilson

Wilson has managed to thrive despite catching passes from eight different quarterbacks over the past three seasons. Since 2022, he’s earned an 85.4 receiving grade, 24th among wide receivers with at least 100 targets in that span. He’s been especially dangerous after the catch, ranking second in missed tackles forced and 12th in yards after the catch over the past three regular seasons.

Defensive player: CB Sauce Gardner

Gardner remains in the conversation for the best cornerback in football, even after a slightly down year by his standards in 2024. Since entering the league in 2022, he leads all cornerbacks in coverage grade (91.9) and PFF Wins Above Replacement (2.10). While his interception totals aren’t eye-popping, Gardner is tied for the NFL lead with 43 forced incompletions over the past three seasons.

Rookie to watch: OT Armand Membou

Seventh overall pick Armand Membou is set to start at right tackle for the Jets after a stellar final season at Missouri. His 90.6 PFF grade ranked third among all qualified FBS tackles in 2024. A rare athlete with excellent movement skills, Membou is an ideal fit for offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand’s outside zone run scheme. He logged the ninth-most outside zone reps in the nation last season and earned an 80.7 run-blocking grade on those plays.

Fantasy Spotlight: QB Justin Fields

Fields has been a fantasy starter anytime he’s been an NFL starter, typically scoring at least 19 PPR points per game. He’s achieved this by being among the elite rushing quarterbacks in the game despite not always being the most effective passer. He joins the New York Jets, where his salary is large enough that he’s unlikely to get benched this season. He has an offensive coordinator who hasn’t typically run with his quarterback very often, but that will change this season. Fields will have a chance to be among the league’s top fantasy quarterbacks if the Jets can successfully utilize the “tush push.”

Best Bet: QB Justin Fields — over 625.5 rushing yards (-108)

In the weeks since we evaluated rushing props to target for the 2025 season, oddsmakers have noticed their mistake in Fields' line and have adjusted it with a 75-yard increase. However, that’s still well below his 738-yard projection. As one of the most electric runners at the quarterback position, Fields is well-equipped to show his flashes in New York.

Bottom line

Aaron Glenn’s top priority in his first year as head coach is reshaping the culture and mindset of the Jets’ organization. If that transformation includes a jump in the win column, it will likely be driven by a resurgent defense and more consistent play from quarterback Justin Fields.
