2025 NFL Preview: Green Bay Packers

  • Head Coach: Matt LaFleur (seventh season)
  • PFF projected win total: 9.4
  • 2024 Record: 11-6 (third in NFC North, lost in NFC wild-card round)

Biggest strength: Pass Protection

The Packers' passing game was a bit inconsistent last season, but their pass protection wasn’t to blame. The team ranked third in the NFL in PFF pass-blocking grade, and their quarterbacks were sacked just 24 times in 18 games — only 13 of which were charged to the offensive line.

Right tackle Zach Tom is the star of the group. His 85.8 PFF overall grade in 2024 ranked sixth among qualified tackles. Tom and the EaglesLane Johnson were the only two right tackles to earn 80.0-plus grades as a run blocker and a pass protector this past season.

Biggest weakness: Cornerbacks

The Packers’ cornerback unit appears shaky heading into the 2025 season, particularly after the loss of veterans Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes. Carrington Valentine played reasonably well down the stretch last season. Keisean Nixon has earned PFF coverage grades in the low 60.0s in three straight seasons. Free-agent acquisition Nate Hobbs posted just a 61.5 PFF coverage grade last season. Safety Javon Bullard also figures to get plenty of slot reps, but this unit could have a difficult time matching up with elite receivers.

Quarterback spotlight: Jordan Love

  • 2024 PFF Grade: 75.8
  • Key Stat: 65.7 intermediate PFF passing grade (35th)

Love battled through an early-season injury to have another solid season as Green Bay’s starter, though it wasn’t quite as spectacular as his performance down the stretch in 2023. His statistical drop-off wasn’t all his fault, as Green Bay fell from sixth to 16th in PFF receiving grade last season.

If there is one thing Love could improve, it's his ability to attack the intermediate level of the field. He ranked 39th out of 43 qualified quarterbacks in the rate of his throws going to the 10-to-19-yard range (16.2%) and just 35th in PFF passing grade on those plays.

Offensive player: RB Josh Jacobs

While Green Bay’s passing game spent all season finding its footing, Josh Jacobs was dominating on the ground. Jacobs finished the season with a 91.3 PFF rushing grade that tied him for fourth among qualified running backs. Including the postseason, he ranked third in missed tackles forced and fourth in explosive runs. Jacobs also proved to be a dual threat, as his 89.2 PFF receiving grade shattered his previous career high and ranked third in the NFL.

Defensive player: S Xavier McKinney

McKinney proved to be a perfect fit in Jeff Hafley’s defense in his first season in Green Bay. His 90.2 PFF coverage grade and eight interceptions both ranked second in the NFL behind division-rival Kerby Joseph. 2024 was McKinney’s second consecutive season with an elite 90.0 PFF coverage grade. Since the start of 2023, his 93.9 PFF coverage grade leads all safeties.

Rookie to watch: WR Matthew Golden

Golden is the Packers' first first-round wide receiver draft pick since 2002, and they’re hoping his blazing speed can loosen up opposing secondaries. In his lone season at Texas, Golden ranked 14th in the FBS with a nearly perfect 99.6 deep PFF receiving grade. Not only will he hit home runs on his own routes, but he should allow the rest of the team’s receivers to better separate underneath.

Fantasy spotlight: TE Tucker KraftGreen Bay Packers

Tucker Kraft was the Packers' clear top tight end in 2024. He was excellent with the ball in his hands, leading the league in yards after the catch per catch and avoided tackle rate. However, his target rate was among the lowest for a starting tight end. This resulted in Kraft not averaging enough points to be a consistent fantasy starter, but he also wasn’t too far behind the top 12. The Packers' coaches have made it a point to talk about wanting to get him the ball more often. If they follow through, it will make Kraft a top-12 option at the position.

Best bet: QB Jordan Love to go over 3,600.5 passing yards (-110)

Although a two-game absence hindered Love’s statistical production in 2024, he produced solid passing metrics, posting the fourth-most yards per attempt (8.1) in the NFL. With a new receiving weapon in Matthew Golden, Love is in for a big year. His projection of over 3,700 yards this season is rather modest compared to his 2023 production (4,158 yards) and 2024 pace; yet, he still comes in well over betting lines. Love could easily surpass the 4,000-yard mark, and that's priced at +230.

Bottom line

Green Bay has turned in a winning campaign and a playoff appearance in five of the past six seasons. The team should be expected to do so again, but it needs to find consistency through the air, both on offense and defense, to take the next step toward Super Bowl contention.
