- Draft Brock Bowers in the second round: The advantage of a hero-RB build is that it allows you to target one of the elite tight ends or quarterbacks in the early rounds.
- A healthy Jonathon Brooks should lead the Carolina Panthers backfield: The former second-round pick is finally healthy, and if he proves he can stay on the field, he has a clear path to becoming Carolina's lead back. He is the ideal second running back option for a hero build.
- Start with an elite running back: Jahmyr Gibbs is the top first-round target for a hero-RB build after averaging at least 21 PPR points per game in each of the past two seasons.
This perfect draft strategy for 12-team, single-quarterback, redraft PPR fantasy football leagues is built on a consensus of current average draft positions (ADPs) from ESPN, Sleeper and Yahoo. It's your round-by-round guide to building a winning roster. While I wouldn't necessarily advise a hero running back strategy this season, this is how to best execute one to maximize your chances.
Round 1, Picks 1-12: Draft a running back
By definition, a hero-RB build needs one star running back to anchor the roster. While that player can occasionally be found early in the second round, it is generally safer to secure your hero back in the first round and then avoid the position for several rounds.
Top Target: Jahmyr Gibbs
Gibbs is the only running back to average at least 21 PPR points per game in each of the last two seasons, combining elite rushing efficiency, double-digit touchdown production and over 500 receiving yards. David Montgomery‘s departure removes the main factor that had previously capped his goal-line ceiling. Detroit’s offensive line is the primary concern after dropping from second to 13th in PFF run-blocking grade last season. Two more starters were replaced this offseason, adding further uncertainty to an area central to Gibbs’ production. New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing has shown a willingness to feature a lead back heavily, so a dramatic shift in usage is unlikely. The same talented supporting cast that creates slight competition for touches also helps Detroit remain one of the league's best offenses. The other elite running backs at a similar ADP carry comparable or greater uncertainty, which keeps Gibbs at the top of the position.
Possible Targets: Bijan Robinson, Christian McCaffrey, Jonathan Taylor, De'Von Achane, James Cook III
Round 2, Picks 13-24: Draft a tight end
The primary advantage of a hero-RB build is that it allows you to prioritize tight end and quarterback early, eliminating the need to spend additional draft capital on backups at either position.
