Chris Godwin moved back to the slot in Liam Coen’s offense last season, a role where Cooper Kupp scored 25.9 PPR points per game in 2021. Godwin took that same role and was off to the best start of his career, averaging 19.7 PPR points per game, the second-best of the year for all wide receivers.

Godwin has been a classic example of a wide receiver who plays the Z receiver spot in two-receiver sets and moves to the slot for three-receiver sets, outside of 2023. He plays better against zone defenses when lined up in the slot and when he’s not pressed. He’s at his worst when he goes up against man coverage, which is pretty typical for these kinds of receivers.

The Buccaneers drafted Jalen McMillan in the third round last season and Emeka Egbuka 19th overall this season. They both primarily played in the slot in college and could be direct competition for his playing time, as he might not be 100% to start the season due to the ankle injury that ended his previous season.
