  • The San Francisco 49ers have placed rookie RB Joe Williams on injured reserve with an injury that would not ordinarily warrant that designation. Williams became a draft time story with reports that the back hadn’t even been on the 49ers draft board before they had a change of heart and traded up to draft him, but now won’t contribute in year one.
  • Williams led the team in preseason playing time with 66 snaps, the most of all 49ers backs, but he was outplayed by fellow rookie Matt Breida and 2015 free agent Raheem Mostert across the warmup games.
  • Williams ended the preseason with good numbers, gaining 5.2 yards per carry, 3.8 of which came after contact, breaking four tackles on 25 carries, but he did fumble the ball and dropped one of his five targets.
