NFL Week 3: Highest-graded plays of the week

  • Isaiah Rodgers’ big play on a perfect day: The Vikings cornerback’s forced fumble and touchdown return helped him to the highest single-game grade in PFF history.
  • Emeka Egbuka impresses again: The Buccaneers wide receiver beats Sauce Gardner with a one-handed grab down the sideline in the closing moments of the game.

With the new season underway, we’re kicking off a weekly series at PFF that offers a behind-the-scenes look at our grading process. Each week, we’ll break down some of the highest-graded individual plays—complete with tweets to show you the action.

Here are a few standout plays from Week 3.

Jamel Dean’s pick-six

It was a big week for defensive and special teams scores, including a standout play from Jamel Dean of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dean earned a +2.0 PFF grade for the pick-six, reading the play perfectly and breaking on the ball the moment it left Tyrod Taylor’s hand. Once he secured the interception, there was only one destination — the end zone.

Emeka Egbuka’s one-handed snag

Rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka has made a strong impression early in his career, and on Sunday he delivered one of the season’s most impressive catches against none other than Sauce Gardner. With Gardner matching him step for step down the sideline, the former Ohio State star hauled in the pass using only his right hand, securing the grab and earning a +1.5 PFF grade on the play.

Justin Herbert’s game-tying magic

With the Chargers trailing 20–13 late against the Broncos on Sunday, Justin Herbert delivered one of the week’s most spectacular plays. Escaping a would-be sack, Herbert reset his shoulders and released the ball just before taking a hit, finding Keenan Allen in the end zone for the game-tying score. The throw earned a +1.5 PFF grade — one of only two such throws on Sunday, matched only by Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams.

Deone Walker’s quick win on a game-clinching interception

While most of the attention on this play centered around Tua Tagovailoa’s throw and Terrel Bernard’s interception, defensive tackle Deone Walker quietly made a major impact. Walker earned a +1.5 PFF grade for beating Dolphins right guard Daniel Brunskill instantly off the snap and even managed to get a slight deflection on the ball. It's a subtle yet crucial contribution that helped set the stage for the turnover.
