Week 2 Thursday Night Football Statistical Review: Packers make a statement against Commanders

  • The Packers' defensive dominance was on full display: Green Bay held Washington to -0.23 EPA per play on dropbacks, including -0.02 when Jayden Daniels scrambled.
  • Washington got nothing going on the ground despite lighter boxes: The Commanders faced, on average, six men in the box yet couldn't generate much consistent yardage.

Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Green Bay Packers made a statement with a dominating win against the highly touted Washington Commanders, 27-18 on Thursday Night Football.

Game Summary

According to the PFF noise-canceled score metric, the game was even more lopsided than the final score indicates, with the Commanders struggling to move the ball. Washington ended up with its worst offensive output since Kliff Kingsbury and Jayden Daniels teamed up, while the Packers were especially efficient on first and second downs.

Passing Summary

The Commanders' poor offensive showing extended to their dropback game, as they couldn’t find value through the air or Jayden Daniels’ scrambling.

Receiving Summary

Tucker Kraft was the star of the game and made the most of his opportunities, but it needs to be said that Romeo Doubs, Matthew Golden and Dontayvion Wicks combined for 300 targeted air yards. With Jayden Reed sidelined due to injury, one can expect those three to be the focal points going forward.

On the Commanders’ side, we also find a tight end as the most productive receiver in Zach Ertz. Nevertheless, Terry McLaurin is the team's clear No. 1 target on the Commanders; it just didn’t work out this time.

Rushing Summary

It’s concerning for the Commanders that they were rushing against light boxes and still couldn’t get anything going. On the Packers' side, being able to stop the run without deploying extra defenders in the box is certainly a recipe for success if they can continue to do so.
