Cardinals DI Calais Campbell likely to retire after 2025

Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Calais Campbell said he would be “very surprised” if 2025 isn’t his last season in the NFL.

Campbell signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals in April, returning to the team that drafted him into the NFL in 2008 and with which he spent the first nine years of his career. When he does retire, Campbell will be a near lock for the Hall of Fame with a resume that includes six Pro Bowls, three All-Pro nods and a 2010s All-Decade team inclusion.

Campbell will turn 39 years old before Week 1 but is still playing at a high level. He was the top-ranked interior defender in PFF run-defense grade last season (85.9) as a member of the Miami Dolphins. Since 2011, he has earned PFF overall grades of 71.4 or higher every year, ranking in the top 15 at his respective position in 10 of those campaigns.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert set to play in first-ever preseason game

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will play in Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, marking the first time he’s ever played in a preseason game.

Herbert will play one or two series, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Pro Bowl quarterback was supposed to play last week against the New Orleans Saints but sat out due to star left tackle Rashawn Slater’s season-ending injury suffered in the prior week of practice.

Herbert has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since the Chargers made him the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Last season, his 91.2 PFF overall grade ranked fourth among 42 qualifying quarterbacks. He threw the ball downfield more, logging a career-high 9.2-yard average depth of target and 33 big-time throws.

Bengals S Geno Stone return to practice

Cincinnati Bengals safety Geno Stone (soft tissue) returned to practice Friday.

Stone was listed as “week to week” last weekend while dealing with a soft-tissue injury. It’s an encouraging development for the team that he’s back on the field just one week later. He appears on track to be ready to go for the Bengals’ season opener Sept. 7 at the Browns.

Stone is coming off a career-worst 53.1 PFF overall grade last season but was strong in both 2022 (72.2) and 2023 (72.2), ranking among the top 25 safeties in the NFL.
