NFL Preseason Week 1 Game Recap: Buffalo Bills 16, Detroit Lions 15

Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell (58) waves at fans before the preseason game against Buffalo Bills at Ford Field in Detroit, Friday, Aug. 13, 2021.

Detroit Lions third-stringer David Blough connected with Bryant University product and 2019 UDFA Tom Kennedy on a clutch 29-yard pass that set up veteran Randy Bullock with a chip-shot field goal to put Detroit up 15-13 in the final minutes. The Buffalo Bills answered with a clutch connection from second-year Georgia product Jake Fromm to rookie wideout Marquez Stevenson that went for 42 yards and set the Bills up with a game-winning field-goal kick from veteran Tyler Bass.

KEY STORYLINES

Hello, Devin Singletary The third-year FAU product didn’t play a ton Friday night (12 total snaps), but he made the most of his limited opportunities. He totaled 42 yards (27 after contact) and forced four missed tackles in addition to his wide-open six-yard touchdown reception.

Penei Sewell vs. Gregory Rousseau — The rep that made waves on Twitter was one of several battles between the two 2021 first-rounders. Rousseau showed great length on the play, but veteran Harrison Phillips really made the play with his quick win against Lions’ Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Sewell allowed just that one pressure across 13 pass-blocking snaps and finished the game with a 60.0-plus PFF grade.

Kutztown’s Finest Shows Flashes Craig Reynolds, a 2019 UDFA out of Kutztown, shook multiple tackles and totaled 49 yards across five carries on the night, including a pretty 24-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Lions’ Offensive Line Woes New Lions running back Jamaal Williams totaled 15 yards across nine carries. He was hit at the line of scrimmage on 7-of-9 carries. And the starting offensive line allowed more than three pressures across 13 snaps as a unit.

Bills’ Tyler Matekevich Shines The veteran linebacker got his hand on the football in the passing game early and recorded a PBU. He also logged multiple defensive stops in the run game and should finish PFF’s grading review process with an 85.0-plus grade.

Julian Okwara’s Pass-Rushing Prowess The former third-rounder out of Notre Dame was outstanding in his 2021 NFL preseason debut. He finished the contest with more than four total pressures, including an impressive sack against Bills veteran tackle Bobby Hart in the fourth quarter.
