Baltimore Ravens fail to reach extension with Lamar Jackson, talks tabled to offseason
- Jackson, who does not have an agent, set a Friday deadline for a deal despite Baltimore's willingness to negotiate in-season.
- Jackson will now play out the final year of his rookie contract and is scheduled to earn $23 million fully guaranteed this season. Baltimore will have the ability to franchise tag him next offseason – and that's projected to be upward of $40 million fully guaranteed.
- Jackson has hinted through some tweets that he would like to have a long-term deal similar to the fully-guaranteed structure Deshaun Watson received in Cleveland. Baltimore owner Steven Bisciotti acknowledged in March that the Watson deal would complicate future negotiations with quarterbacks.
- Derek Carr, Kyler Murray and Russell Wilson have since also signed new contracts, but none came close to Watson's fully-guaranteed structure.
- Barring a significant injury or a dramatic drop-off in play, Baltimore will negotiate again in the offseason, when Jackson will be another year closer to free agency. “It was a pretty big risk last season,” Jackson said this week. “I'm just playing football. Anything can happen. God forbid the wrong thing happens.”
Tennessee Titans sign S Amani Hooker to contract extension
- It’s a three-year, $33 million extension for Hooker, who was entering the final year of his rookie contract. He gets $19.5 million in total guarantees.
- The Titans drafted Hooker in the fourth round in 2019, and he took over as a starter last season, recording a career-high 62 tackles, 13 defensive stops and three pass breakups in 12 games. He earned a very strong 83.3 overall PFF grade, which ranked fifth in the league.
- Tennessee is now the third team to have two safeties (Kevin Byard and Hooker) making over $10 million annually, joining the Seattle Seahawks (Jamal Adams/Quandre Diggs) and Arizona Cardinals (Budda Baker/Jalen Thompson).
New York Jets LT Duane Brown could land on IR
- Brown missed the entire week of practice with a shoulder injury, and the team is evaluating test results to see if he’ll miss an extended period of time.
- The Jets signed Brown to a two-year $22 million deal on August 15th to help replace Mekhi Becton, who suffered a season-ending knee injury.
- Brown just turned 38 years old and is coming off a season in which he earned a 71.5 PFF grade with Seattle, the lowest mark since his rookie year in 2008. He earned a very strong 87.3 grade in 2020.
- Right tackle George Fant, who began camp at left tackle and played there last season, will move back to that position, while rookie Max Mitchell takes over on the right side.
