2024 Recap
Following back-to-back 3-9 campaigns, expectations were low for Arizona State in 2024. The Sun Devils were even picked to finish last in the Big 12 in the preseason media poll. ASU smashed those expectations by winning the conference in its first year as a member and taking Texas to double overtime in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Arizona State’s best season of the 21st century was largely driven by three offensive stars: quarterback Sam Leavitt, running back Cam Skattebo and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. While Skattebo is now with the New York Giants, Leavitt and Tyson return as two of the best in the country at their positions. The Sun Devils need to improve up front on defense, but they should still be among the top contenders for another Big 12 title.
Biggest Strength: The best quarterback-wide receiver duo in college football
Leavitt is the No. 2-ranked returning quarterback in college football, while Jordyn Tyson ranks as the No. 3 returning wide receiver. No other school has a duo that placed in the top five of both lists, let alone the top three.
Biggest Weakness: Pass rush
Arizona State recorded just a 58.7 team pass-rush grade last season, the third-worst mark in the nation. Its 25.5% pressure rate ranked second-worst among Power Four programs. The Sun Devils didn’t make significant additions through the transfer portal, so their returning starters must show major improvement in that area.
