Grading Highlight of the Week: EDGE Malik Carney, Saskatchewan Roughriders
There wasn’t a more impactful player in the CFL this past week than Saskatchewan’s Malik Carney. The edge rusher finished as the highest-graded player in the league with a 91.6 overall mark.
Carney earned the top run-defense grade of the week at 82.0. He played just eight run-defense snaps but made the most of them, recording two solo stops. He put future Hall of Fame left tackle Stanley Bryant on skates for a tackle for loss early in the game and shed a block on another run play, getting into position before a teammate made the tackle — still earning him a positive grade.
Carney also recorded a league-best 90.1 pass-rush grade. While his 17.2% win rate was below his season average (20.8%), the impact of his wins elevated his grade. He posted two sacks and two hits, along with another pass-rush win. His first sack came in under 2.5 seconds and ended a drive, while the second was a strip sack on Zach Collaros that gave Saskatchewan possession on Winnipeg’s goal line.
A strong performance in both phases will always lead to a top grade, and this week, Carney proved he’s one of the CFL’s most well-rounded defenders.
