The problem is that Engram doesn’t have the talent or consistency of other tight ends with similar average draft positions. He is currently the TE8, and five of the seven tight ends ahead of him have PFF receiving grades of 81.0 or better over the past three years. The exceptions are Trey McBride and Dalton Kincaid — young tight ends who were drafted highly and have earned better grades than Engram as of late. All of the tight ends from TE9-TE15 have a 75.0-plus PFF receiving grade over the past three seasons, except for rookie Brock Bowers due to not having NFL experience.

Christian Kirk was the Jaguars' leading wide receiver over the first 12 weeks of the 2023 season, with 762 receiving yards. Engram averaged 10.4 fantasy points per game during that time. Kirk suffered a season-ending injury on the first play of Week 13, and Engram blew up to 19.3 fantasy points per game over the last six games of the season, leading all tight ends over that time. Engram also averaged 10.4 fantasy points per game in 2022 when Kirk didn’t miss a game.

Engram has played at the level of a below-average starter, but he’s a rare tight end where his utilization doesn’t match his PFF grade. He’s been elevated by his health, the Jaguars' pass-heavy offense and the team's willingness to target him often, particularly in the right matchup. Engram is currently getting drafted at his ceiling outside of the scenario where Kirk gets hurt again, in which case another top-five season is a high possibility.
