Seahawks sign edge defender Dwight Freeney

  • The Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran free agent edge defender Dwight Freeney. Freeney will likely be able contribute right away with Cliff Avril on injured reserve, not to mention injuries to Frank Clark, Michael Bennett, and Marcus Smith. With the Falcons last season, he was a big contributor and played 415 snaps. Among edge defenders, he earned the 37th ranked overall grade of 78.3.
  • In his lone season with the Falcons, Freeney proved he still had ability left as a pass-rusher and was their most efficient pass-rusher from the edge on a per-snap basis. He produced a pass-rush productivity of 10.7, racking up 46 total pressures including four sacks on 332 pass-rush snaps.
  • So far this season, Seattle has struggled to get pressure on the quarterback from the edge, with only Michael Bennett registering a pass-rush productivity above the 9.1 league average at 9.2. Worth noting however, Bennett isn’t primarily an edge defender and will also play inside.
