Rams DI Donald unlikely to play in season opener

  • According to Adam Schefter, the Los Angeles Rams and interior defender Aaron Donald have not made any progress on a contract extension, signaling Donald’s likely absence from the regular-season opener against the Colts. The Rams’ could keep Donald under contract for two more seasons if they utilize his fifth-year option.
  • Donald has been the best interior defender in each of the past two seasons earning the top grade at his position in both. His 2015 grade of 99.2 ranks second-best in the PFF era (2006-2016) while his 2016 grade of 98.5 ranks third.
  • In 2016, Donald was a third-down assassin, leading all defensive interior players in pass-rush productivity on third downs at 15.5 while racking up 35 of his 82 pressures including 13 quarterback hits or sacks on the down.
