  • San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has announced that recently acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will start for the 49ers in their Week 13 clash against the Chicago Bears. Garoppolo, who was acquired via a trade from the Patriots in October, will replace C.J. Beathard, who is currently dealing with knee and hip injuries.
  • Garoppolo gave the 49ers a glimpse of his potential when he took over for the injured Beathard on the team’s final drive against the Seattle Seahawks last week. Garoppolo dropped back to pass three times, and completed two-of-two pass attempts for 18 yards and one touchdown, with one completion coming from a nine-yard pass to convert a 4th and 6.
  • Garoppolo has only played 231 regular season snaps since he entered the league in 2014, which is actually 159 fewer than C.J. Beathard has played this year, but in that small sample he has shown that he could give San Francisco an upgrade in performance under pressure. In 2016, Garoppolo logged 18 pass attempts when under pressure and completed 10 of them for 144 yards and one touchdown, good for a passer rating of 100.8 and a healthy 8.0 yards per attempt, which towers over Beathard’s numbers this year. This season, Beathard has attempted 79 passes while under pressure and completed just 31 of them for 262 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for a passer rating of 42.3 and an average of just 3.3 yards per attempt.
