  • According to Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions have claimed edge defender Dwight Freeney. The news comes less than a day after Freeney was put on waivers by the Seattle Seahawks.
  • In four games with the Seahawks, Freeney showed he still has plenty of gas left in his tank producing a pass-rush productivity of 11.5, the eighth highest mark among 4-3 defensive ends in Weeks 8 through 11. Freeney was one of the best players on the field in Seattleā€™s Week 9 game against the Redskins, earning a game grade of 85.1. He was very effective rushing the passer, producing six total pressures including a hit on the quarterback and two sacks.
  • Despite being well past his prime in age and overall production, nothing points to Freeney not being able to contribute at this stage of his career. Including 2017, Freeney has produced a pass-rush productivity score well above the league average 9.1. Over the course of the regular season and playoffs with the Falcons in 2016, Freeney produced the eighth highest pass-rush productivity among 4-3 defensive ends with a mark of 11.3.
  • Freeney could be a welcome boost to a Lions pass-rush that has been ineffective this season. Only three teams currently have a lower pressure rate than the Lions 31 percent.
