Dolphins QB Cutler to miss time with ‘several broken ribs’

  • Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase has told reporters that quarterback Jay Cutler suffered multiple cracked ribs in the team’s Week 7 win over the New York Jets. Gase did not officially rule Cutler out for the Dolphins’ Week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens, but he did say that the chances of having him in the lineup don’t look good.
  • The Dolphins signed Cutler in the summer after starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill suffered a season-ending knee injury in training camp, however, the 12th-year veteran has been far from spectacular through his first six games, and currently ranks 30th of 34 qualifying quarterbacks with a PFF overall grade of 67.1.
  • With Gase as his offensive co-ordinator in 2015, Cutler had a career-year throwing deep, and posted a passer rating of 96.3 on throws that travelled at least 20 yards downfield, good for 12th among quarterbacks that year. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the pair have yet to recapture that form, and Cutler’s passer rating of 51.2 on deep throws currently ranks 29th of 33 quarterbacks with at least four deep pass attempts in 2017.
  • With Cutler on the sidelines, 11-year pro Matt Moore will likely start, after he performed well in relief of Cutler in Week 7, completing 13-of-21 pass attempts for 188 yards and two touchdowns, with 57 of those yards and a score coming via the deep ball in a come-from-behind victory over the Jets.
