- The Dallas Cowboys are releasing veteran cornerback Nolan Carroll, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Carroll was signed to a three-year, $10 million deal in the offseason after spending the last three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
- It was a tale of career highs and lows for Carroll in 2016. He played a career-high 910 snaps for the Eagles and earned a career-low PFF overall grade of 44.6. He saw a career-high in targets, with 89 passes thrown into his coverage and also allowed a career-high in receptions (56) yards allowed (752), touchdowns allowed (4) and passer rating allowed (100.0).
- Carroll played 82 snaps over the first two weeks of the 2017, before missing the following three games with a concussion. He wasn’t off to the best of starts in coverage, having allowed six receptions, 94 yards and a passer rating of 118.8 on the six throws into his primary coverage. On average, he allowed 68 yards per cover snap, ranking 92nd of 115 qualifying cornerbacks.
- The fact that the Cowboys are willing to move Carroll means they are quite comfortable with rookie corner Jourdan Lewis in a starting role opposite Anthony Brown. Through five weeks of the season, Lewis has allowed 0.80 yards per coverage snap, the fifth-best mark among rookie cornerbacks. He is currently ranked 22nd of 109 qualifying players at the position with a PFF overall grade of 82.9.
