Bills sign RB James Cook to four-year, $48 million contract extension

The Buffalo Bills and running back James Cook agreed to a four-year, $48 million contract extension, according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Cook ended his hold-in Tuesday when he practiced for the first time in training camp, so it was clear progress was being made on an extension. The new deal includes $30 million guaranteed, which is the third most at the position, behind Saquon Barkley and Ashton Jeanty.

The former Georgia Bulldog had his best season as a pro last year, finishing with a ninth-ranked 86.2 PFF overall grade (among 59 qualifying running backs). Including the playoffs (three games for Buffalo), Cook ranked just 25th in total snaps at his position (568), so the Bills have done a great job managing his reps and keeping him fresh.

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders suffers oblique injury at practice

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders suffered an oblique injury at Wednesday’s practice, according to Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot.

The injury will likely keep Sanders out of action for the Browns' Week 2 preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. Fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel was able to practice through his hamstring injury, so he may see his first NFL snaps.

Sanders had a strong debut last week, earning an 82.1 PFF overall grade across 47 snaps. He was especially effective against the blitz, completing six of seven passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Dolphins EDGE Chop Robinson carted off at Wednesday’s practice

Miami Dolphins edge defender Chop Robinson was carted off at practice Wednesday after suffering an apparent injury in a scrimmage against the Detroit Lions.

The injury occurred during a scramble for a loose ball. The severity of the injury is unknown at this point, but Robinson posted on his Instagram, “I'm good yall [sic] nothing serious.” Robinson had an excellent rookie season in 2024, especially in the second half of the season. From Weeks 10-18, he tied for second in total pressures (42), ranked third in pass-rush win rate (21.5%) and tied for ninth in PFF pass-rush grade (83.9).

With Robinson, Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb, the Dolphins' pass-rush unit is a big strength for the team heading into the 2025 season. Chubb missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from a torn ACL, and Phillips appeared in just four games before suffering a torn ACL of his own, so the team’s depth at the position has been tested in recent years.

Saints G Trevor Penning diagnosed with turf toe injury

New Orleans Saints left guard Trevor Penning suffered a turf toe injury, according to NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill.

Underhill didn’t put a timeline on Penning’s injury but did note that players typically need 4-6 weeks to recover from turf toe. His status for the Saints’ season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, which is less than four weeks away, is up in the air.

The Saints selected Penning in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he is transitioning to guard after playing both left and right tackle over his first three seasons. He was a much better run blocker (70.1 PFF grade) than pass blocker (51.6) last season across 1,081 snaps.
