Packers QB Jordan Love undergoing left thumb surgery

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love will undergo surgery on his left thumb, according to general manager Brian Gutekunst.

The injury occurred in the Packers’ preseason opener against the New York Jets on Saturday. The procedure will fix a ligament injury in Love’s non-throwing hand. The team expects the starting quarterback to return to practice next week, and he should be ready to go when Green Bay opens its season against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7.

Bills RB James Cook returns to practice

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook practiced Tuesday, marking the first time he’s done so since the start of training camp.

Cook has been in a “hold-in” status throughout camp as he seeks a new contract from the team. The former second-round pick out of Georgia is set to become a free agent at the end of the season if no deal is reached.

Cook’s 86.2 PFF overall grade in 2024 ranked ninth among 59 qualifying running backs. Including the playoffs, he averaged 3.24 yards after contact per attempt and forced 47 missed tackles on the ground.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford misses another practice

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is sitting out practice again Tuesday with a lingering back issue, according to ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.

Stafford was reportedly set to return to practice Monday, but he continues to sit out as concerns grow about his availability for the regular season. Head coach Sean McVay described Stafford’s back issue as a “flexible and fluid” situation.

Stafford remains one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, just one year removed from earning an 88.2 PFF overall grade that ranked fifth among 38 qualifying quarterbacks in 2023. He had a down year by his standards last season (74.7) but still put the Rams in position to upset the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round.

Should Stafford miss any time this season, Jimmy Garoppolo would be the next man up for Los Angeles.

Eagles G Kenyon Green “week-to-week” with a shoulder injury

Philadelphia Eagles guard Kenyon Green will likely miss the remainder of the preseason with a shoulder injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The news comes just one day after it was announced that Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson would undergo a minor surgery on his knee after suffering an injury at Sunday’s practice. The Eagles acquired Green in March in a trade that sent safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans

Green has struggled mightily since the Texans made him a first-round pick in 2022, ranking near the bottom in PFF overall grade in 2022 (37.7) and 2024 (38.6) while missing the 2023 campaign with a shoulder injury.
