Junior Galette injury really hurts Redskins' pass rush

Junior Galette suffered a torn Achilles in Wednesday’s practice and will miss the 2015 season. The Redskins signed Galette to a one-year deal this offseason knowing that he could have to miss some time for disciplinary reasons, but this is a huge blow for a defense that looked like it might take a step forward in 2015.

Galette was a force last year for the Saints, especially as a pass-rusher. He was our No. 4-ranked 4-3 defensive end, and ranked second behind only Cameron Wake at the position in terms of pass-rushing productivity.

Washington planned on moving Galette to 3-4 OLB this year, which would have paired him across from another dominant pass-rusher in Ryan Kerrigan (No. 5-graded 3-4 OLB last season, fourth-best pass-rusher) – that could have given the Redskins one of the most lethal pass rushes in the NFL. Instead, they’ll now look for second-round rookie Preston Smith – who was the 10th-best pass-rusher among 4-3 defensive ends in college football last season at Mississippi State — to make an immediate impact in his place.
