In some previous years, the first month of the season was enough to identify some outliers whose early-season fantasy success was a house of cards built on garbage-time scoring. That includes recent names like James Jones from 2014 and Marvin Jones from last season, both of whom caught a pair of touchdowns and added close to 100 yards in garbage time over their first four contests. J.J. Nelson and Coby Fleener remain the closest we have to that so far in 2017, but neither is one of the 25 biggest first-month beneficiaries from garbage time this decade. Still, this season’s more meager garbage-time totals have led to some fantasy insights. Let’s look at those from Week 4.
Quarterbacks
With two late pull-aways, two overtime games, and a number of other close contests, Week 4 featured less garbage time than a typical week. In fact, the Bears, Browns, Titans, and Ravens all ran 29 or more garbage plays, and that was more than twice as many as the fifth-place team (the Dolphins, 13).
