2024 Recap
Even with most of the 2023 roster returning in 2024, Virginia Tech disappointed under Brent Pry with just a 6-7 record. The Hokies have now failed to crack the top 25 across his three years in Blacksburg, the program's longest drought since 1990 to 1992.
With pressure mounting in 2025, Pry will need this program to take the next step. Virginia Tech did a solid job in the transfer portal, bringing in underrated stars like Tomas Rimac, Ben Bell and Terion Stewart. The Hokies will need quarterback Kyron Drones and their passing attack to improve if they want to avoid mediocrity once again.
Biggest Strength: Pass rush off the edge
Even though Virginia Tech lost two outstanding pass rushers to the NFL in Aeneas Peebles and Antwaun Powell-Ryland, the team should still be strong in that department thanks to two transfer-portal additions.
Ben Bell (Texas State) has the best pass-rush win rate of any FBS edge defender since 2023, while James Djonkam (Eastern Michigan) earned a 91.5 PFF pass-rush grade while playing mostly linebacker for the Eagles. The latter is expected to move to edge defender this season.
Biggest Weakness: Passing attack
Virginia Tech ranked just 108th in EPA per pass last year. Kyron Drones is back at quarterback, but his 73.2 PFF passing grade placed him outside the top 50 FBS quarterbacks in 2024. The Hokies also lost their top four receivers from last season.
