2024 Recap
Bill O'Brien picked up where Jeff Hafley left off in his first season as Boston College’s head coach. The Eagles finished with a 7-6 record for the second straight season. In Week 3, Boston College was ranked No. 24 in the AP poll, marking the first time in six years that the program cracked the top 25.
Boston College’s defense was the biggest reason for its success, ranking 31st in the nation in EPA per play. That unit returns a strong secondary but has some concerns up front, as the defensive line lost all four starters, including a couple of stars.
O'Brien helped quarterback Tommy Castellanos improve his PFF passing grade by 17.1 points, but he transferred to Florida State this offseason. O'Brien will now have to rely on Dylan Lonergan with a rebuilt offensive line in front of him, though the Eagles do return most of their weaponry.
Biggest Strength: Secondary
Boston College returns seven of the eight defensive backs who played at least 250 snaps last season. That includes safeties KP Price and Carter Davis, the Eagles’ highest-graded returning defenders.
Biggest Weakness: Defensive line
Boston College boasted a strong defensive line last year but lost a superstar edge defender in Donovan Ezeiruaku and a very good defensive tackle in Cam Horsley. Ezeiruaku was a first-team PFF All-American, while Horsley led all ACC interior defenders in PFF run-defense grade (84.5). The Eagles also waved goodbye to starting edge rusher Neto Okpala and interior defender George Rooks.
