Position fit: Guard in a power-blocking scheme

Stats to know: Playing out of position at tackle, Dawkins yielded two sacks, two hits and five QB hurries in 2016.

What he does best:

• Big strong powerful guy that can block anyone man on man in power run blocking.
• Nice explosion, with the biggest “pop” in the draft on the offensive line.
• The kind of offensive lineman you want to call plays to run behind.
• Substantial room for growth through development and better fundamentals.
• Played tackle in a pro-style offense and flashed big time skill.
• Showed continued improvement for three straight years.
• Solid showing in the Senior Bowl game as he transitioned to guard.

Biggest concern:

• A bit heavy, can he play with the level of quickness and speed necessary every down in the NFL?
• Showed vulnerability on inside pass-rush moves. Feet stall and lacks consistent mirror ability.
• The more space he has when blocking 1-on-1 the worse things get (should be mostly negated playing guard).
• Struggles with backside cut off blocks at times on the first and second levels.
• Surrendered season-high three pressures (sack, hit, hurry) vs. Penn State.

Bottom line: Dawkins has strength and pop you can’t teach or find. A bit heavy, but athletic and not slow, Dawkins can be a dominant guard in a power-blocking scheme. He needs development and strengthening of his fundamentals (especially at the guard position.) Dawkins demonstrates physical tools necessary to be a Pro Bowl player in the right system.
