PFF scouting report: Darrell Daniels, TE, Washington

Name: Darrell Daniels

School: Washington

Position fit: Inline/move tight end

Stats to know: Averaged 364.3 snaps, a 73.2 receiving, 70.7 run-blocking, and 72.0 overall grade over the past three seasons.

What he does best:

  • At a relatively average size, Daniels gains route separation utilizing above-average quickness, and lateral shiftiness.
  • However, his combination of awareness level and proven-run blocking success should set size-related concerns aside.
  • Feisty, high-effort blocking style powered by leverage.
  • Hands of consistency, only two dropped passes over the last three years – 65 targets.
  • Focused-effort to salvage lost blocks.
  • Just enough special teams experience to make a difference.
  • Lined up all over the field in Washington’s two-tight end scheme, including the backfield.

Biggest concern:

  • Teams may view him as more of a “move” tight end rather than an every-down option.
  • Data limited. Only five snaps in pass protection in 2016, accounting for 39 snaps over three years, but only allowed three total pressures.
  • Quick off-the-snap, inside moves tend to be his kryptonite.
  • Ran half of all his routes from the slot the last three years, but his average yards per snap in route increased from 0.83 to 2.04 when stationed inline.

Player comparison: Daniel Fells

Does just enough damage as a receiver to keep defenders honest and thrives off crossing routes. Anything Daniels is able to offer on top of his run-blocking ability is a bonus.

Bottom line: Daniels could be in danger of potentially being undervalued. After three years of strong grades across the board, his elevated floor offers a low-risk/high-reward investment. His abilities appear ideal to a two-tight end system.
