- Around The NFL editor Gregg Rosenthal has listed San Francisco 49ers 2016 starting running back Carlos Hyde as one of his NFL Training Camp: Thirteen Potential Surprise Cuts.
- While acknowledging that Hyde, in the last year of his rookie contract, is the “biggest long shot” on this list, Rosenthal cites rookie fourth-round draft pick Joe Williams as a reason for any potential cut. Williams, who briefly retired from Utah in September, posted an overall PFF grade of 55.8 in 2016, which was down from his 2015 grade of 67.4.
- Matt Breida, signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent, could also impact upon any decision to release Hyde. Breida’s production dropped in 2016, but he posted a PFF overall grade of 74.1 in 2015, ranking 63rd out of 209 running backs with at least 250 snaps.
- Hyde, who has struggled to remain healthy, missing a combined 12 games the last two seasons, did have a career year in 2016, falling just shy of the 1,000-yard mark. In the process he posted a PFF elusive rating of 50.0, ranking 16th out of 53 eligible running backs.
