Like we’ve observed in past seasons, home stats crew tackle tendencies remain very predictable across the NFL. Each week, I chart all tackles awarded, both solo and assisted, in addition to the tackle opportunities from each game. The resulting data gives us a strong indication of which games offer the most IDP value in terms of tackle production.
Tackles Awarded Per Opportunity
As part of charting tackles awarded over the past three seasons, I’ve kept track of how many tackles each stat crew is recording per opportunity. To calculate opportunities per game, simply add up the total plays and subtract incompletions and scores and add in any returns.
While many in the IDP world think a tackle is a tackle, there’s a fairly wide range of variation in terms of how home crews record tackles across the league. The following chart shows the tackle opportunities each offense yields and defense receives each game and also gives the tackles awarded per opportunity for each home crew:
