Fantasy Football: Boom, bust performances to consider ahead of Week 9

  • Michael Pittman Jr. continues to deliver: He secured nine passes for 102 yards and a touchdown (23.5 PPR points), pushing him to WR6 on the season after being drafted as WR46.
  • Emeka Egbuka’s quiet stretch is nothing to worry about: He logged 6.5 PPR points in Week 8 and is averaging 8.2 per game over his past two outings. But his strong 27.6% target share and Mike Evans‘ injury mean fantasy managers shouldn't panic.

BOOMS

TE Tucker Kraft, Green Bay Packers

Kraft took National Tight Ends Day to heart.

He exploded for 33.3 PPR points on a 26.7% adjusted target rate against the Steelers. He also forced four missed tackles — two more than any other tight end in Week 8.

Kraft will continue to be a high-end fantasy tight end for the rest of the season, with a favorable fantasy playoff schedule. He ranks third in red-zone targets among tight ends, making him a weekly threat to score.

Temperature Check: Top-three TE for rest of season

RB Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts

Taylor celebrated his third three-touchdown game in just eight weeks. He is rivaling LaDainian Tomlinson's 2006 season, when the long-time Charger racked up six such games.

On top of the on-pace numbers, Taylor holds the rushing triple crown (first in carries, yards and touchdowns). His 12 rushing touchdowns are more than every NFL team except the Buffalo Bills. If he can stay healthy, with this efficiency and volume, it could shape up as one of the better fantasy seasons in recent memory.

Temperature Check: The RB1

WR Michael Pittman Jr., Indianapolis Colts

While Pittman didn't put forth the best wide receiver performance of the week, his 23.5-PPR-point outing makes him a healthy WR2 for the slate.

Pittman has arguably been one of the biggest steals in fantasy football this season. His ADP was WR46, and he currently sits as the WR6, averaging 15.7 PPR points per game.

If you drafted him over anyone in the range of Khalil Shakir, Jauan Jennings and Jayden Reed, congratulations. You are probably having a very solid fantasy season. Pittman has posted a 26.7% adjusted target rate this season, which ranks behind only Josh Downs on the team. He also places behind only Tyler Warren in red-zone targets this season.

Temperature Check: High-end WR2; Low-end WR1 for rest of season

BUSTS

WR Emeka Egbuka, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

After a 6.5-PPR-point game in Week 6, Egbuka is now averaging only 8.2 points per game over the past two weeks.

The story this week is that the Buccaneers didn’t need to do much through the air to beat the Saints. No Tampa Bay pass catcher tallied 50-plus yards, and quarterback Baker Mayfield barely threw for 150 yards. The defense was consistently getting takeaways and setting up the offense in great field position.

Egbuka still ranks second on the team in adjusted target rate (27.6%), and the only person higher than him is Mike Evans, who we will not see until the fantasy season has wrapped up. Don’t hit the panic button on Egbuka.

Temperature Check: Mid-tier WR1

RB Quinshon Judkins, Cleveland Browns

Judkins was a victim of the game script, and then an injury, in Week 8.

Before coming out of the game with a shoulder injury, Judkins produced just 4.8 PPR points against the Patriots, who surrendered just one catch and only 19 yards on nine rushing attempts to the rookie. It's unclear at this point if Judkins will miss time. Dylan Sampson may be worth a waiver-wire pickup just in case.

Temperature Check: High-end RB2 when healthy

TE Jake Ferguson, Dallas Cowboys

Ferguson put up a goose egg on National Tight Ends Day but is still the TE1 in fantasy through eight weeks.

The Broncos did a great job of keying in on Ferguson, and his target rate showed it. In Week 8, he notched just a 4.3% adjusted target rate, which ranked ninth on the Cowboys. That won't hold over the rest of the season, but with CeeDee Lamb now back in the equation, Ferguson's 28.6% adjusted target rate through the first seven weeks of the season is set to drop.

He should still finish as a top-five tight end this year, but his TE1 production may take a dip with the Cowboys' offense fully firing again.

Temperature Check: High-end TE1
