The first slate of preseason games are in the books, and while one week of data—let alone one week of preseason data—doesn’t give us the best idea of what’s going to happen this season, it’s new data nonetheless. One of the most telling stats, and the one that I am going to focus on in a weekly article throughout the 2013-2014 season, is fantasy points per opportunity (PPO).
If you’ve poked around the Fantasy section of stats here at Pro Football Focus, you might be familiar with PPO. An opportunity is defined as a carry or a route run, so PPO is defined as fantasy points divided by carries and routes — Pts/(Att. + Routes).
I looked at PPO data for all wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends that took a snap during Week 1 of the preseason — that’s over 600 players. Despite the fact that starters didn’t play much across the board, many familiar names were at the top in PPO.
