Defensive Packages Report: Week 5

A couple blowouts in Week 5 lead to some teams making their first appearances on the Package Report. Let’s get right in to it! As usual, we will start with the teams that spent the highest percentage of snaps in their base package:

1. Cincinnati Bengals (81.0%)

A relatively balanced team on the season, the Cincinnati Bengals strayed from their usual and went all in with their base package against the Miami Dolphins. Apparently, Brian Hartline’s record-breaking performance the week before did not scare them into thinking he was something they should be all-too worried about. Rookie Vontaze Burfict put in his first full day of work, playing every defensive snap for the Bengals at the WLB position. Unless you are a one of the top defensive prospects coming out of college, expected to start and be a playmaker right away, what you look for in a rookie is improvement, and Vontaze Burfict did just that. He posted a +2.2 PFF Overall Rating for the game, bringing his season average to a +2.0. I am interested to see what the Bengals do with him from here.
