2024 Recap
Utah entered 2024 as one of the favorites to win the Big 12 — and the No. 12 team in the preseason AP poll, the program's second-best opening ranking ever. However, the Utes went on to have their first losing campaign since 2013. That had nothing to do with the defense, which remained a top-15 unit in college football in EPA per play. Utah’s passing attack ultimately tanked the team's season, finishing with the worst PFF passing grade in the Power Four (48.4) across four quarterback starters.
The Utes should have some stability under center in 2025 with the dynamic Devon Dampier transferring in from New Mexico. His development as a passer, along with a questionable group of weapons, will determine whether Utah can once again compete for conference titles.
Biggest Strength: Offensive Line
Utah boasts PFF’s second-ranked offensive line in college football and brought back all five starters, including two potential first-round tackles in Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu. Tanoa Togiai also ranked third among Power Four guards with a 79.0 PFF overall grade last season.
Biggest Weakness: Are the weapons there for Devon Dampier to take the next step as a passer?
While the Utes’ revolving door at quarterback was the biggest reason for their offensive struggles in 2024, they also placed just 91st in team PFF receiving grade. None of the transfers they brought in at wide receiver are true stars, either, even the ones from the Group of Five level.
