2024 Recap
2024 was a disaster for Oklahoma State. After entering the year ranked No. 17 in the preseason AP poll, the Cowboys endured their worst season in 33 years, culminating in a 3-9 record. The team didn’t win a single Big 12 game for the first time in Mike Gundy’s two decades as head coach. Reigning Doak Walker Award winner Ollie Gordon II’s production fell off precipitously, from 1,056 rushing yards after contact in 2023 to 880 total rushing yards this past season.
Oklahoma State's defense was the far bigger issue, though, finishing as the third-lowest-graded unit in the Power Four (63.0). That looks like it’ll remain an issue in 2025, plus the Cowboys are breaking in a brand-new quarterback on offense. The one bright spot on that side of the ball is a couple of pretty good options to replace Gordon’s production at running back.
Biggest Strength: A solid group of running backs
Even though Ollie Gordon II is now with the Miami Dolphins, one could argue that Oklahoma State’s top two offensive players are still running backs. Freddie Brock transferred in from Georgia State after posting back-to-back 80.0-plus rushing grades, and Trent Howland is a bruising back at 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds who logged a 79.3 PFF rushing grade as the No. 2 to Gordon last year.
Biggest Weakness: A complete unknown at quarterback
The Cowboys should look to rely on their ground game next year, because they have two inexperienced options under center right now. Redshirt sophomore Zane Flores and redshirt freshman Hauss Hejny are in a tight battle for QB1, but neither has attempted a pass in college.
