Positive matchups
Glover Quin was on the list Week 1, and lo and behold, he gave up 5 completions on 7 targets in Week 2. These completions went for 70 yards, including a big gainer on Roydell Williams, who isn’t exactly the cream of the crop. Week 1 was against Indy which obviously holds a stellar passing game, but this definitely raises questions about the Houston secondary. Miles Austin and the Cowboys attack are up next, and that could pose another serious mismatch.
As much as it pains me to say, Darius Butler had one of the worst weeks for a CB this year. 2 huge penalties in addition to 14.8 yards per reception against and a TD allowed. Oh, and a 157.6 rating against. And this was against Mark Sanchez. I watched the whole game, and he just couldn’t seem to key in on the ball while it was in the air. Hopefully this is just a technique issue and not something larger, because the kid has potential. That said, the Buffalo passing attack this week is a good remedy for what ails you. If he struggles against the like of Roscoe Parrish, I won’t be surprised at all if he’s not starting come Week 4.
Zackary Bowman of the Chicago Bears has matched up against (primarily) Tony Scheffler, Calvin Johnson, and Miles Austin. Granted, 2 of those players are stud receivers, but the fact remains he’s given up 13 completions for almost 150 yards. I’d expect that trend to continue Week 3 against Driver and Jennings; both are looking like solid plays.
Negative matchups
So, remember how I mentioned Nnamdi Asomugha last week? How he wasn’t targeted at all Week 1? He wasn’t targeted in Week 2. 112 snaps, 0 targets. There’s not much else to say. This guy is the best CB in the NFL. Sorry Darrelle Revis.
Jason Allen absolutely tooled Bernard Berrian and Brett Favre last week. 5 targets, 2 completions for 24 total yards, 2 INTs, and 1 pass deflection. Essentially, Favre completed the same number of passes to Berrian as he did to Jason Allen. Allen also had a solid Week 1 (albeit against Buffalo and Lee Evans), being targeted 5 times and allowing 3 completions for 32 yards. Don’t expect much from whichever Jet receiver he covers this week. Oh, and Sean Smith – enjoy your seat on the bench, because your ‘replacement’ is playing like a ProBowler.
There’s a guy named Sam Shields on the Green Bay Packers. He’s an undrafted rookie free agent. You have no clue who he is, and frankly, neither do I. However, try these season stats on for size – 106 snaps, 3 targets, 3 completions for 33 yards. Wait, what? Who has he covered? Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin (yeah yeah, and Steve Johnson)? Interesting. Keep serious tabs on this guy on Monday Night Football – if he can lock down a WR in a Mike Martz offense, the GB passing game is one to stay far, far away from if your WR plays against them.
A tip of the cap to a vet and a young stud. Ronde Barber has a 0.0 QB Rating against this season, and Brandon Flowers has a 19.5 rating against. With full disclosure that both have played the awful Cleveland passing attack, one has been a stud for quite some time, and one is on the verge of breakoutdom. Remember, Flowers had a 17.4 PFF rating in 2009, which was good for 5th in the league.
