- According to Ian Rapoport, Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien will hand the starting quarterback job to rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson. The Texans moved up to take Watson in this year’s draft and he has been battling for the job ever since.
- Watson didn’t have a great preseason earning a poor grade at 45.4 overall. Watson really struggled passing from a clean pocket producing the 65th ranked adjusted completion percentage at 69.7 percent with the 75th ranked passer rating of 63.0.
- O’Brien is likely banking on Watson’s potential and his accuracy prowess displayed in college that saw him rank third this draft class with an adjusted completion percentage of 76.1. He was especially effective on deep passes in his last season at Clemson tossing 14 touchdowns on passes 20 yards or more downfield while ranking second in the class in adjusted completion percentage on throws of 20-30 yards.
