NFL Wild Card Playoffs: Highest-graded plays of the week

  • Caleb Williams’ fourth down magic: With Chicago trailing on fourth-and-8 and 5:37 remaining, Williams scrambled to his left and fit a throw over two Packers defenders to connect with Rome Odunze, a play that earned a +1.5 PFF grade and was one of six big-time throws he produced in the game, tied for the most by any quarterback in a single game this season.
  • Both of Quinyon Mitchell’s interceptions: The Eagles’ All-Pro cornerback was the only player in the NFL this week to record multiple plays earning a PFF grade of +1.5 or better. Both plays were interceptions, including one in which he undercut a throw intended for backup tight end Jake Tonges to take the ball away.

This season, we launched a weekly series at PFF that provides a behind-the-scenes look at our grading process. Each week, we have broken down some of the highest-graded individual plays, complete with tweets to show you the action.

Here are a few standout plays from the wild-card round.

Caleb Williams’ fourth down magic

Just weeks after producing the highest-graded quarterback play of the season on his game-winning touchdown pass against Green Bay, the Bears quarterback delivered again on Wild Card weekend.

With Chicago trailing on fourth-and-8 and 5:37 remaining, Williams scrambled to his left and fit a throw over two Packers defenders to connect with Rome Odunze, a play that earned a +1.5 PFF grade and was one of six big-time throws he produced in the game, tied for the most by any quarterback in a single game this season.

Matthew Golden’s tackle-breaking touchdown

The Packers’ rookie wide receiver turned in the best performance of his young career despite Saturday night’s loss to the Bears, highlighted by the first receiving touchdown of his career.

On the play, he caught a screen pass six yards behind the line of scrimmage, made multiple defenders miss with quick jukes and spin moves and finished in the end zone on a play that earned a +1.5 PFF grade.

Isaiah Simmons’ blocked punt

The Carolina Panthers ultimately fell short against the Los Angeles Rams, but a late fourth-quarter blocked punt by Isaiah Simmons gave them a chance.

The former first-round pick won quickly off the edge and met the ball as it left the punter’s foot, setting Carolina up inside the Rams’ 35-yard line on a play that earned a PFF grade of +1.5.

Both of Quinyon Mitchell’s interceptions

The Eagles’ All-Pro cornerback was the only player in the NFL this week to record multiple plays earning a PFF grade of +1.5 or better. Both plays were interceptions, including one in which he undercut a throw intended for backup tight end Jake Tonges to take the ball away.

In just his second NFL season, Mitchell has already established himself as one of the league’s premier cornerbacks.
