QB Film Review: Caleb Williams is playing the best football of his career

Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears pulled off another dramatic win in Week 10, coming from behind to beat the New York Giants. Williams was outstanding for the second straight week, continuing to stack impressive performances.

The second-year signal-caller earned an 81.1 overall PFF grade for his performance on Sunday, his second-best mark of the season. Over the past two weeks, his 90.7 overall PFF grade leads all quarterbacks.

In his first season under head coach and playcaller Ben Johnson, Williams is starting to look like he’s putting it all together. After back-to-back strong outings, he now ranks as PFF’s 10th-highest-graded quarterback on the season and is showcasing elite talent while thriving within the system.

Williams’ stat line — 20-of-36 for 220 yards and one touchdown — might not stand out, but it doesn’t tell the full story. The Bears’ receivers dropped five passes, including both of Williams’ big-time throws, each of which could have gone for touchdowns.

The first two throws perfectly showcased Williams’ talent. These types of passes were all over his college tape, and he’s carried that ability into the NFL. His arm talent has never been in question, and he continues to make difficult throws look effortless under pressure.

More importantly for his development, he’s doing a much better job of avoiding sacks. Williams has cut his pressure-to-sack rate from 28.2% in 2024 to 12.1% after taking zero sacks on Sunday.

Another major area of growth for Williams over the past two weeks has been his work over the middle of the field. On such throws, his 91.8 PFF passing grade during that span ranks second among all quarterbacks.

Operating over the middle of the field is a necessity in Ben Johnson’s offense, but it requires the ability to layer throws over underneath defenders, and this play showcases that skill.

The Bears call a post-wheel concept to the near side of the field with a backside dig. Against the Giants’ quarters coverage, Williams has multiple options but chooses the safer throw to the backside dig. He could have targeted the post or wheel, but he anticipates the Giants passing it off cleanly, with the safety taking the post and the corner peeling off to handle the wheel. Instead, he works back to the dig, which he expects to be open based on the safety’s leverage. Once the underneath linebacker stops his feet, Williams fires a perfectly layered throw over the top.

Another key requirement for success over the middle of the field is anticipation. Windows close too quickly in the NFL for quarterbacks to wait until a receiver is open — they have to throw with confidence based on defensive cues. Williams has started to develop that anticipation, and it’s showing up consistently in his recent tape.

Down 10 points with under five minutes to play, the Bears needed chunk plays to get back in the game — and Williams delivered one of his best throws of the night.

Chicago ran a dagger concept, with one receiver clearing out the safeties on a deep route and another running a dig behind it. It’s an effective design against most coverages, and with the Giants again in quarters, the Bears got exactly the look they wanted.

Williams never took his eyes off the concept, knowing that if neither safety stepped up, he’d have a window between the linebackers. The anticipation on this throw is what stands out. Williams began his motion before Rome Odunze had cleared the defender, trusting his read and firing with velocity for a huge completion.

As Bears fans know, the team’s future largely depends on how well Caleb Williams performs. While there have been ups and downs, he’s playing the best football of his young career, helping Chicago win six of its last seven games.

The schedule toughens from here, but if Williams sustains this level of play, the Bears will remain firmly in the playoff race and the hunt for the NFC North crown.
