Myles Garrett draws ideal Week 14 matchup in push for NFL sack record

  • Closing in on the history books: With 19 sacks this year, Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett now sits just four away from owning the NFL single-season sack record outright.
  • Now, he takes on an old foe in Week 14: Garrett has faced Dan Moore Jr. 179 times over his career — more matchups than any other opponent — and he's produced 26 total pressures with seven sacks.

Despite being deep in the midst of a lost season, the Cleveland Browns are giving NFL fans real reasons to keep tuning in each Sunday. Beyond the emergence of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the Browns are approaching a potential historic moment as Myles Garrett closes in on the NFL’s single-season sack record.

With 19 sacks this year, Garrett now sits just four away from owning the record outright. With five games still to play, many assume he’ll get there, but it’s worth remembering he already went through a five-game stretch earlier this season — from Weeks 3 to 8 — in which he recorded only 1.5 NFL sacks.

In addition, most would agree it would be far sweeter for Garrett to break the record without needing the 17th game — a detail some fans believe would merit an asterisk in the record books.

Given all of that, Garrett has likely circled this week’s matchup with the Tennessee Titans as a prime opportunity to boost his numbers and give himself some breathing room as he chases the record over the final month of the season.

No offensive tackle wants to be the one who gives up that historic moment to Garrett on a play that could become one of the defining snapshots of the 2025 regular season.

This holds true for no one more than Tennessee Titans left tackle Dan Moore Jr. After facing Garrett eight times over four seasons with the Steelers, Moore may have thought he left those challenges behind when he departed the AFC North this past offseason.

Moore put together a solid start to his first season in Tennessee despite a difficult offensive environment, but he has stalled in recent weeks, allowing four or more pressures on three different occasions throughout November.

In their eight career matchups, Garrett generated at least three pressures against Moore's Steelers in every game and recorded one sack per contest. Notably, seven of his eight sacks in those meetings came when he was lined up directly across from Moore.

Garrett has spent 79% of his pass-rushing snaps aligned against left tackles this season, but we also know how dangerous he can be from unconventional spots — including head-up over opposing centers. With Titans center Lloyd Cushenberry III missing last week’s loss to the Jaguars because of a foot injury, that versatility is worth keeping in mind.

Sunday could be a recipe for disaster for Cam Ward, who has been sacked 48 times this season. Over the last 20 years, only one rookie quarterback has been sacked more through the first 13 weeks of his NFL career — the BearsCaleb Williams last year.

The blame can’t fall solely on Ward’s struggling offensive line, though, as the 23-year-old simply hasn’t done a good enough job eluding pressure so far in his NFL career.

Ward wasn’t drafted for his sack avoidance, but when he’s under pressure, he gets taken down 27% of the time, the highest pressure-to-sack rate in the NFL. For context, Dak Prescott has been pressured just 12 fewer times than Ward, yet he has taken 31 fewer sacks.

On the other side of the ball, Myles Garrett is unsurprisingly converting an astonishing amount of pressures into sacks. It doesn’t take much analysis to understand that this is the blueprint for getting close to the sack record.

When T.J. Watt tied Michael Strahan’s record in 2021, he did so on just 62 pressures — the same number Garrett has right now. That finishing ability is what makes Myles Garrett one of the greatest pass rushers we’ve ever seen.

Pushing an offensive tackle back into the quarterback to rack up pressures is one thing, but doing things like this to Hall of Fame left tackle Trent Williams is what makes Garrett truly one of one. These are the plays that earn NFL records.

In a season where Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has nothing left to play for, it appears he’s actively trying to help Garrett chase this lofty goal.

For example, Cleveland has blitzed less in recent weeks since the sack record came into focus. Whether or not it’s coincidental, Garrett has consistently been more effective as part of a simple four-man rush — only two of his 19 sacks this season have come on blitzes.

There are no prizes for guessing how the Titans have fared against standard four-man pass rushes all season.

While the improvement on stunts isn’t as dramatic as the change in blitz frequency, the Browns have also increased their stunt usage in recent weeks, ranking above league average over the past two weeks after sitting in the bottom 10 before Week 12.

Sunday will be a prime opportunity for Garrett to chip away at the 3.5 sacks he needs to match the record. If he can come away with two or more, he’ll put himself in a strong position to finish the job over the final stretch of the season.

Breaking the record outright on Sunday isn’t out of the question, either. Garrett has three career games with four or more sacks, plus one 3.5-sack performance — coincidentally against the Titans the last time these teams met.
