Fantasy: Reaction - Matt Flynn Chooses the Seahawks

Just when it seemed the Dolphins were going to nab their quarterback, Flynn opted to sign with the Seahawks. The real question is whether he will open the season as a starter — he knew it would be an open competition at quarterback when he signed with the team.

The former Packer joins a team rife with young talent, particularly at the receiver position. Injuries aside, Sidney Rice brings an explosive element to the team. In his last healthy season, which does happen to be in 2009, Rice held the second-highest PFF “WR Rating” at 125.1, catching 84 passes for 1,322 yards and 8 touchdowns. Granted, that was the year of Brett Favre's renaissance, but Rice can do some damage if he is healthy.

Doug Baldwin surprised many as an undrafted free agent last season, netting a healthy 2.24 yards per pass route run (YPRR) en route to leading the Seahawks in receiving last season with 792 yards. Ben Obomanu and Golden Tate are other young options with upside for the newly-minted Seahawk quarterback.

The Seahawks also return a good running game by retaining Marshawn Lynch, though coming off of a contract season might mean a dropoff for Mr. Skittles.

Fantasy Spin

In his two NFL starts, Matt Flynn has posted a great 9.02 yards per attempt (YPA) and 9:2 TD:INT ratio. Those are great numbers, but in severely limited playing time. If he gets the starting job over Tarvaris Jackson — and that is still in question — he would make a solid QB2 option, nothing more.

As for his aforementioned teammates, I believe they all get a slight boost over what they had with Jackson, again assuming Flynn wins the job. I already liked Doug Baldwin as a sleeper going into the season, so having Flynn under center helps that cause.
