In an attempt to boost his versatility, Bruce Irvin added weight before the combine and still put on a show, running a sub 4.5 40-yard dash. This does bode well for a player who appeared severely overmatched in the run game at West Virginia University. In the passing game, Irvin performed respectably, disrupting backfields to the tune of 8.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. But because of his subpar performance in the run game, Irvin's early projections have him slotted as a situational pass rusher, and not much else.
Obviously, the Seattle Seahawks have much higher hopes for Irvin. We've seen Seattle reach for picks in the first round before. Just refer back to 2011 when they selected James Carpenter, a consensus mid-rounder, in the first round. Irvin looks like a product of more of the same mindset, especially given that he will be adjusting to a new position in Seattle's 4-3 defense. Von Miller certainly turned some heads a season ago, and it appears that Seattle hopes Irvin can mirror some of that in a similar role as an outside linebacker in a defense with a four-man front. Even if he only sees the field as a situational pass-rusher, Seattle has a front chock-full off pass rushers that quarterbacks will not be happy to face on third down. Red Bryant and Chris Clemons don't really need the help, but should put even bigger smiles on their fantasy owners' faces if Irvin becomes what Seattle expects.
