Remember when fantasy matchup analysis used to be “Team A gives up the most fantasy points to wide receivers”? Well, we’ve moved from analog to digital and now look at matchups on an individual level. Each week, I dig through the actually coverage tendencies for all 32 NFL teams and compile this information in the WR/CB Matchup Chart, which is released on Thursday mornings.
Remember, the chart only contains data from the present season. For those who would like to do historic research on coverage responsibilities, I suggest checking out the 2015 Coverage Data Chart. We also released a new feature last week, the Shadow Coverage Matrix, which breaks down every shadow coverage situation for every team throughout the season.
Week 5 matchup upgrades
Odell Beckham Jr. vs. Green Bay – You’re starting him no matter what, but I felt the need to put Beckham atop the list given his many panicking fantasy owners. Beckham gets a beaucoup matchup this week against a Packers team that has already surrendered huge fantasy days to Marvin Jones and Stefon Diggs. Beckham will see Sam Shields and Damarious Randall on the outside (and Shields only if he’s cleared from his concussion). Randall has been especially ineffective this season, yielding an average of 21.8 yards per reception to opposing wide receivers.
Terrelle Pryor vs. New England – He’s still the only show in town for the Browns and will continue to be heavily targeted. The Patriots tend to use Logan Ryan to shadow opposing team’s No. 1 receivers with safety help on the back side. Malcolm Butler is isolated on the No. 2, which will be Andrew Hawkins this week. Pryor should have no problem with Ryan, who has seen targets on 25 percent of his routes. He also yields 0.42 fantasy points per route, which is tied for 10th among this week’s projected starting corners.
