Staying on top of injuries throughout the week, and especially on Sunday mornings, is one of the easiest ways to maintain an edge in fantasy football. Outside of, you know, just making sure you don’t have inactive players in your starting lineup, it’s important to understand how one injury can greatly impact the fantasy potential of other skill position players within a game.

Lucky for you, this weekly series is here to help. Rather than just frantically refreshing each team’s injury report, I’ll do the heavy lifting each Saturday night and update injuries and provide analysis once inactives are released and early game-time decisions finalized on Sunday mornings.

Updates/analysis

Leonard Fournette, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars – Inactive – In a surprising turn of events, Fournette is inactive Sunday for violating team rules. Chris Ivory is a strong start in his absence, leading the team with 17 touches last week with Fournette sidelined. Although T.J. Yeldon was more productive in that game, he did see six fewer touches and is more likely to get pulled at the goal line.

Jeremy Hill, RB, Cincinnati Bengals – Inactive – With Hill a surprise inactive, expect Joe Mixon to see a much larger workload this week. The matchup is strong as well, up against a Jacksonville “run funnel” defense that ranks last in yards per carry allowed (5.3) but best in opposing passer rating (61.6). I’ve since moved up Mixon to a high-end RB2 in both PPR and standard leagues.

Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia Eagles – Inactive – Fantasy’s No. 1 tight end is inactive today after his hamstring flared up in warmups. In the two games Ertz missed last season, Trey Burton saw 13 targets to Brent Celek’s five. Burton would be my preferred waiver add for those truly desperate. The matchup is deceptively soft, with Denver leading the league for the second consecutive season in percentage of receiving fantasy points allowed going to tight ends, and ranking fourth-worst in fantasy points allowed to opposing tight ends over expectation.

Emmanuel Sanders, WR, Denver Broncos – Active – Sanders is coming back from an ankle injury three weeks earlier than original estimates to run the majority of his routes against Patrick Robinson, our third-highest-graded cornerback. Sanders is a risky start this week, and I’d bet Demaryius Thomas outscores him handily as I wrote about here.

Rob Kelley, RB, Washington Redskins – Active – Kelley is expected to play, but early reports indicate his workload will be limited. He’s better off left on your bench this week, missing three of his starting offensive linemen up against a Seattle defense ranking fifth-best in fantasy points per game allowed to opposing running backs.

Andre Ellington, RB, Arizona Cardinals –  Active – Per Adam Schefter, Ellington will play today. After head coach Bruce Arians promised more work for Adrian Peterson as a receiver, Ellington being active likely puts a damper on that, though Peterson should still see plenty of carries on the ground in a dream matchup.

Nick Boyle, TE, Baltimore Ravens — Inactive — Boyle has played on 366 of Baltimore's snaps and has seen 21 targets this year. His absence helps make Benjamin Watson a slightly better play.

Safety worth way more than 2 points. Help protect your family with fast, free will.
