Lamar Jackson struggles against Clemson

  • A potential showcase game for Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson’s NFL prospects turned sour as he struggled with accuracy and decision-making against a stout Clemson defense. Jackson was off to a great start in 2017, showing great strides as a passer, but some of his previous issues popped up again against the Tigers.
  • Jackson’s adjusted completion percentage of 58.5 percent ranked 67 out of 78 qualifiers in Week 3 as he was off-target on a number of throws throughout the night. While most of the game was a struggle, the contest was close to sealed early in the third quarter when Jackson mis-read the coverage in the middle of the field for a pick-6. He later mis-read the coverage on the goal line (though it was in garbage time) on another pass that should have been an easy Clemson interception.
  • At this point in Jackson’s evaluation, there is a lot to like about him as a passer, but there are also a number of games that highlight his deficiencies. Whether it be this game against Clemson, or last season against LSU, Houston or Wake Forest, there is enough on tape to be concerned with Jackson’s inconsistent accuracy.
  • Credit must go to the Clemson defense which looked like one of the nation’s best units, and Jackson still managed 87 rushing yards on only 10 carries, but he needs to put together better efforts against top defenses as a passer.
