Each week at PFF, we've given you an overview of all the top draft-eligible quarterbacks across the college football world, with eyes towards the 2018 NFL draft. Now nine weeks into the season, with reputations building and some performances shining, we continue our rankings of these top 13 draft-eligible quarterbacks.
Below you will find the top draft-eligible quarterbacks from across the country, and how they stack up against one another in both traditional and advanced statistics, ranked by their overall PFF grade so far this season. While these rankings are obviously not how they'll either finish, nor how they are projected to be drafted, these rankings serve as a guideline to rank how each quarterback has fared for their respective teams, while our advanced stats further depict how they may fare at the next level.
With that, here are our takes on the top 13 draft-eligible quarterbacks, that you won't get anywhere else.
1. Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma – 96.9 overall grade
Game Grade vs Kansas: 86.0
While his sideline antics have gotten much of the attention this week, Mayfield had another solid game against Kansas, even if the stat sheet wasn’t up to his usual standards. His best passes fell incomplete, as he threw two beautiful deep balls that were dropped as well as a tight-window end zone throw that TE Mark Andrews was unable to haul in. Mayfield did have his fair share of missed throws, particularly in the first half, but it was another strong effort from him, albeit one where he was only pressured on five of his 32 dropbacks.
2. Will Grier, West Virginia – 91.5 overall grade
Game Grade vs Texas: 50.7
Grier threw only seven passes before injuring his finger on a goal line dive that resulted in a fumble. Grier finished 5-for-7 for 46 yards with his two incompletions being dropped, including his best throw of the day on a deep crossing route.
3. Lamar Jackson, Louisville – 90.8 overall grade
Game Grade vs Syracuse: 90.5
While the stat sheet was very similar to last week’s effort against Virginia, Jackson played a much better game this week against Syracuse. He threw two fantastic deep passes, first on a deep crosser and later dropped one in the bucket on a “go” route for a 29-yard touchdown. Jackson was his usual dynamic self as a runner, as he finished with 120 yards and two scores on only 11 carries. While he took good care of the ball, Jackson’s accuracy generally teeters between showing off tight-window NFL throws to missing open throws, and those were on display this week as well.
